ABOUT DEREK
Derek William Ramsay was a bright light whose curiosity, humor, and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Born in Lewiston, Maine, on September 5, 1986, Derek was an identical twin and the beloved son of Cheryl and Robert Ramsay. He grew up in Topsham, where his playful energy and love for the outdoors shaped the foundation of who he became.

From a young age, Derek was known for his boundless curiosity and adventurous spirit. Whether searching for insects and frogs by the lake, playing sports with the Topsham Recreation Department, or skiing, snowboarding, and waterskiing with fearless enthusiasm, he approached life with excitement and joy. He loved camping in Acadia, days at the beach discovering sea creatures, and cherished time with family at “camp” on Thompson Lake.

After attending Mt. Ararat High School, Derek earned his GED and was briefly recruited to join the U.S. Marines—a moment of great pride for him. Although his plans changed as mental illness began to take hold, Derek continued to demonstrate extraordinary perseverance throughout his life.
He worked in a variety of jobs he enjoyed, from mowing greens at Martindale Country Club to restaurant work and private courier jobs in Boston. He loved city life—exploring museums, the aquarium, and the Boston Public Library—and delighted in showing his family around his favorite places.

Living with schizophrenia and substance use disorder (SUD) for more than 20 years, Derek faced tremendous challenges but never lost his kindness, sense of humor, or hope for a full and meaningful life. He dreamed of stable work, love, and family, and he fought courageously to achieve those dreams. Through it all, his compassionate nature, quick wit, and gentle soul continued to shine.

Derek passed away from a fentanyl overdose on September 30, 2024, at age 38. He is deeply missed by his family, friends, and the caring community at Shalom House, where he found support and belonging. His legacy lives on in the love he shared and the laughter he brought to others.
